A Magical Matariki Celebration Uniting Hearts, Honoring Memories and Looking Ahead

Matariki, the Māori New Year, invites us to reflect, express gratitude, and set our sights on the future. Our recent celebration was nothing short of magical. This year, we gathered tamariki (children), whānau (families), kaimahi (staff), funders, partners, and the wider community in a heartwarming display of unity and connection.

Our celebration began with a beautiful pathway illuminated by LED candles held by our resilient tamariki. Each candle not only lit the way but also represented the hopes and dreams we carry into the new year. Seeing the soft glow from over 100 candles was a powerful reminder of the light within each one of us.

At the end of the pathway, guests were welcomed to our Remembrance Table, a sacred space filled with love and reflection. Attendees wrote the names of loved ones who had passed over the last year on wooden stars. We collected over 50 stars, each one symbolizing an individual who made a significant impact in our lives. Displayed prominently as a backdrop, these stars served as a touching reminder of our collective memories and the strength of our community.

The highlight of our celebration was thanks to performances from tamariki at Potiki, Kākano, and Homai Early Childhood Centres. Their joyful singing and dancing captured the hearts of everyone present. The pride in their expressions illuminated the space, filling it with an undeniable spirit of joy!

In addition to the performances, Centre Supervisors from Ngā Taonga Aroha, Aranga, and Eden showcased stunning wall displays that highlighted the mahi (work) and creativity of their tamariki. These displays featured over 150 pieces of artwork, underscoring the collaborative spirit that fuels our early childhood centres and demonstrating our commitment to nurturing creativity in the young minds of our community.

A pivotal moment of the day was the unveiling of our new tohu (logo), it tells the story of who we are. Inspired by Te Pā Harakeke, it places mōkopuna at the centre nurtured by their mātua and tūpuna. The woven harakeke strands reflect the strength and kotahitanga of whānau, bound together across generations. This tohu embodies the heart of TAONGA Education Centre Charitable Trust; a place where the voices and aspirations of whānau are uplifted and tamariki and rangatahi are supported to flourish.

As we gathered for Matariki, we took time to acknowledge the support and love that has enriched us over the past year. Each connection and gesture of kindness strengthens our commitment to our communities. A heartfelt thank you goes out to everyone who has supported us; your ongoing aroha and tautoko (support) profoundly impacts the lives we touch.

We must also express our gratitude to our exceptional cooks and the OT Youth Justice team for the delicious kai (food) and BBQ that nourished our gathering. We served over 150 meals, allowing everyone to share in the warmth and joy of our celebration.

As we remember this year's Matariki celebration, let's reflect on the importance of community spirit and unity. What we have built together is more than a celebration; it’s the foundation of a resilient and thriving community.
